Chapter 3: Whose Covenant Is It Anyway?

“A marriage covenant is a very serious thing and it should never, ever, be broken under any circumstance.” Really? That’s it? Please tell me there’s more. Welcome to the chapter where there’s more—much more! And for a good reason. You see, we, the church, are not only being transformed by the culture because we don’t know why we’re here (chapter 1) and because we are committing The Great Role Reversal with God and one another (chapter 2), but also because we thought we wrote the book on marriage, divorce, and remarriage!

To have a proper and complete biblical understanding of marriage, divorce, and remarriage, it helps to understand why God created marriage in the first place. Before you “tune” me out because you think you’ve heard this before, trust me when I say that most of you, including pastors, have not heard all I am about to say, which is why I devoted an entire chapter to it. How do I know this? Because I have been listening to many of you for years and never heard it before! For those of you who are looking for some new premarriage counseling material, you just found it! And yes, many of you, like me, will wish you had known this years ago! That’s okay. God’s ways are higher than ours, and He doesn’t waste anything! Allow me to kick things off with a question.

Have you ever stopped to consider why, after creating man, God said, “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28 KJV)? Was it just about populating the earth with offspring that look like us who could fund Social Security? Or did God have something else bigger in mind? Welcome to the first reason why God created marriage.
